City Council Briefs - A Summary of Actions Taken by the
Noise Ordinance Concerns
Two Councilmembers, Ruth Atkin and Ken Bukowski, requested the City Attorney provide a report on the noise ordinance and what can trigger a “complaint.” This was made partially in response to complaints raised about the protestors outside of the Woodfin Suite Hotel.
Parking Permitting on
61st-62nd Street
The Council agreed to implement a limited parking permit system for the 61st-62nd Street area, generally east of Hollis to Doyle Street.
East Bay Bridge Center
Improvements
The Council approved a feasibility study regarding the appearance of and traffic access to the East Bay Bridge Shopping Center. SZFM Design Studios made the presentation, which includes improved landscaping, signage, storefronts and access. In response to Councilmember John Fricke’s questioning the need for the improvements in light of the fact that the East Bay Bridge Center is already highly successful, Mayor Nora Davis responded that the City of Oakland is looking to develop the old Oakland Army Base, not far from the Center, into a major retail attraction, and that “…Emeryville must invest in our current facilities to stay competitive.” Sales taxes represent Emeryville’s largest single source of General Fund revenue.
21st Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition
The Council approved a $30,000 contribution to the Emeryville Celebration of the Arts for this year’s Art Exhibition, which will kick off with a gala reception on Friday, October 5th. A location for this year’s Art Exhibition has not yet been found.
