City Gets Ready to Tackle Climate Change - Council Appoints Task Force to Examine Community’s Role for the Future

It’s probably one of the best examples of “think globally; act locally.”

Ever since An Inconvenient Truth made the term “global warming” a household word, governments at all levels have moved to take action to reduce their community’s “carbon footprint” in an effort to proactively address the issue.

Emeryville is doing its part. In June the City Council formed Emeryville’s inaugural Climate Change Task Force, to examine the issue and recommend strategies that can be implemented at the local level to address climate change.

Mayor Nora Davis and Vice Mayor Ruth Atkin are the City Council appointees to the Task Force.

Other Task Force members include Deborah Badhia, a resident and Executive Director of the Berkeley Downtown Association, Sam Foushee, Spencer Green, Pat Hooper, Jeffrey Koch, A. Robin Orden, and John Scheuerman.

Cheryl Webb is the Emery Unified School District Board representative, and Denise Pinkston of TMG Partners is the business community representative.

Gail Donaldson, represents the Planning Commission. One more member, from the City’s Utility Committee, awaits appointment.

“We’re really pleased with the quality of community volunteers and business partners who stepped up to serve on the Task Force,” said Peter Schultze-Allen, Emeryville’s Environmental Analyst who will be the primary City staff liaison to the Task Force. “I’m confident that working together, we’ll develop some creative and effective recommendations for Council consideration that will help Emeryville do its part to reduce our carbon emissions and help combat climate change.”

The Task Force held its initial organizational meeting in July. For other information on the Climate Change Task Force, including meeting dates and agendas, visit the City’s website, at www.ci.emeryville.ca.us, or call Peter Schultze-Allen at 510-596-3728, or pschultze-allen@ci.emeryiville.ca.us.
