New Leadership Team at Emery Secondary
The school year will begin at the same time. The school day will be the same length. But there are significant changes being implemented this year at Emery Secondary School.
While most students enjoyed the summer, Emery school administrators came up with a plan to strengthen the academic structure at the district’s 7-12th grade campus.
Under the plan, three leadership teams will be created to oversee the six grade levels at Emeryville Secondary.
Anakarita Allen will retain her job as principal at Anna Yates Elementary, but she will also oversee the 7th and 8th grade programs.
Dr. Antonio Cediel will remain Emery Secondary’s principal but will also focus on the 9th and 10th grade programs.
Assistant Superintendent Stephen Wesley will add the 11th and 12th grade programs to his duties.
Each administrator will keep track of their grades’ curriculum, instructors, students and parents. They will work closely with the new dean of students, Max Monroe. The goal is to advance the school to the next level.
“The overall objective is to create a distinguished high school in the city of Emeryville,” said Wesley.
Wesley said the fact Anna Yates Elementary has been performing well under Allen’s supervision allows the district to focus now on Emery Secondary.
“We can throw all our major talent into that school,” said Wesley.
In conjunction with the administrative restructuring, the Emery school board has approved three new guiding principles for the district. They are:
*We hold high academic, social and professional expectations
*We create a sense of family
*We support and inspire innovation to end racist and classist practices
The school year begins Monday, Aug. 27. With it comes the return of football. The sport has been absent for five years at Emery Secondary. The school has hired Darryl Creighton from St. Louis as its new athletic director. He will also be the football coach.
