Wesley to Serve as Interim Superintendent at EUSD

Emery school district officials are in no hurry to find a permanent replacement for former Superintendent Tony Smith.

Smith left the district in late October to take a job in the San Francisco Unified School District.

Melodi Dice, Emery school board president, said the District will set a timetable in mid-December for their process for hiring a new superintendent. They expect to hire a search firm and ask for a significant amount of input from the community. She expects the process to take months.

Dice said the Board isn’t sure yet what type of person they’ll be looking for. They want to hear from parents, teachers and other school employees before making that decision. She said the District’s situation is quite different from when Smith was hired in 2003.

“The needs of the District have changed,” she said. “We are in a different place than we were four years ago.”

Dice said the Board can take its time searching for Smith’s replacement because the District is in “great hands” right now.

When Smith left, Stephen Wesley was promoted from assistant superintendent to interim superintendent. Wesley has 35 years experience in education. He earned his bachelor’s degree at De Paul University and his master’s degree at the University of Dayton. He did his doctoral work at Columbia University. He has worked in school districts in St. Louis, Washington, D.C., and California.

Dice noted Wesley also has two strong principals with Anakarita Allen at Anna Yates Elementary and Dr. Antonio Cediel at Emery Secondary.
