VIEWPOINT
APPROVAL OF MEASURE A SPEAKS VOLUMES
Emeryville voters’ overwhelming approval of the Measure A school parcel tax on June 5th sends several positive messages about the nature and positive direction of our City.
First, and foremost, it says that we support our schools. Residents and the business community understand that Emeryville’s own, healthy school system is part and parcel of an overall strong and vibrant community.
Second, the June 5th vote demonstrates that Emeryville voters and businesses understand that in today’s economic and political environment, communities must increasingly rely upon their own resources to fund local government services, including our public schools.
Third, commercial properties – payers of over 75% of the Measure A assessments – have shown once again that they are critically important and caring community partners.
And fourth, Emeryville residents and businesses recognize the progress that has been made in the Emery schools with the passage of the original Measure A – and we expect that progress to continue. When almost 87% of the voters say “yes,” you know you’re doing something right.
Under the leadership of our talented and charismatic Superintendent, Dr. Tony Smith, in conjunction with his administrative staff, faculty, and parents, the Emery School District has been transformed from one that was in disarray to one of the most-improved small districts in the State. Test scores are up, new resources are available to students and teachers, registration has stabilized and morale and a sense of pride has been restored.
More work lies ahead, of course. Challenges remain, and taxpayers – who just agreed to a 50% tax increase on themselves – have a right to expect results and demand accountability. We’re fully confident that Dr. Smith and his strong supporting cast will justify the voters’ faith in them.
A healthy business climate depends on a healthy community. That is why the Emeryville Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors unanimously supported the reauthorization of Measure A, and why some of the largest property owners in town, including Wareham Properties, Madison Marquette/Bay Street, and Pixar, all strongly endorsed Measure A, even if it meant higher taxes.
Our thanks to the voters and businesses of Emeryville, and congratulations to the students, parents, and staff of the Emery School District. You’ve been given the resources to continue your path to success. We look forward to more good news from you.
