SCHOOL DISTRICT SEEKS PANEL MEMBERS

Emeryville school officials are looking for community members to sit on a real estate advisory committee.

The committee will consist of seven to 11 members and represent a wide cross-section of the community.

School officials plan to select the committee this summer. Applications are on the Emery Unified School District web site, www.emeryusd.k12.ca.us

The committee’s main function will be advising the school board on real estate matters, such as what to do with surplus property and how much land the district will need to accommodate future enrollment.

Another primary task is the impending move of the Habitot Children’s Discovery Museum from downtown Berkeley to a 20,000-square-foot site just off Doyle Street in Emeryville, the former Middle School site.

In May 2006, the school district and Habitot signed a letter of intent to negotiate a lease for that facility. As those plans progress, the school district is seeking advice from the community through the advisory committee.

Josh Simon, vice president of the school board, says Habitot’s relocation to Emeryville will be a positive addition to the city’s schools.

“This is an exciting opportunity to expand the services we provide to Emeryville children of all ages,” he said.

The Habitot organization was founded in 1992. It opened its Berkeley museum in 1998. The facility receives 80,000 visitors a year.

Habitot offers hands-on learning experiences for young children in the arts and sciences. They also put on safety classes for parents as well as special events for children.

In June, the museum held a summer story-time event as well as a Family Pride Day. On July 14, there will be Bastille Day activities with French-related projects. On Aug. 24, there will be special recycling programs for children.
