How Leadership East Bay Can Help Open Doors For You
In May 2003 I was new to Berkeley and, as the General Manaager of a non-profit student run media company, getting connected to the local business and government communities was an important aspect of my job. I heard about the Leadership program through a Chamber of Commerce “mixer” and signed up.
The vision of Leadership East Bay is that a community’s most valuable resource is its people. This program expands on the need to grow active participation from informed and dedicated community leaders by helping current and future leaders educate themselves about key infrastructure topics. The program immerses 20 local professionals into a learning environment which fosters building a closely knit team with a solid foundation of trust.
My Leadership program started with a 2.5 day retreat where we really got to know each other through team building exercises. This also served to define the learning objectives important to our particular class. The eight one-day sessions that followed built on the momentum of the retreat while also introducing us to key leaders throughout our extended community. Our day long breakout sessions took us all over the area as we explored the following topics: Culture and the Arts, Transportation and the Sciences, Media and Communications, Criminal Justice, Education, Health and Human Services, Government and Economic Development.
I met more key people in a meaningful way in those 11 days than I would have on my own in a few years. The Program connected me exponentially with the communities that made a real difference in both my business and personal life. Today, I serve on the boards of directors of several prestigious civic and community organizations in the East Bay.
This year the Retreat is set for September 11, 12 and 13. Registrations are due by August 15th and space in the program is limited. The tuition for Leadership East Bay is $1,000 and includes lodging, food and materials for the retreat as well as continental breakfast and lunch for each of the eight one-day sessions.
