Emery Ed Fund Seeks Volunteers

In the spirit of the Emery School District’s official slogan, “Where partners power student success,” the Emery Ed Fund is pleased to announce a variety of wonderful volunteer opportunities with Emery students this school year. Anyone can be a school volunteer. If you enjoy working with people and can empathize with the struggles and triumphs of being a student, we want to hear from you! You may also want to ask your co-workers to participate. Groups of dedicated volunteers already join us from Pixar, U.C. Berkeley, IKEA, Wells Fargo, Semifreddi’s, Samuel Merritt College, Cal State East Bay, the Emeryville Fire Department and others. Below is a listing of current volunteer programs. In addition, we also recruit groups for one-time events like fundraisers, Career Week, wellness outreach and office assistance.

Volunteer Opportunities at Anna Yates Elementary and Emery Secondary Schools for the 2007-2008 School Year:

Reading Buddy Program: A dedicated team of volunteers take 45 minutes out of their workweek to come to Anna Yates Elementary and read aloud to k-3rd grade students from children’s books.

Read Across America: Save the date! March 3, 2008 is Dr Seuss’s birthday, when the day is set aside for reading only! Volunteers from all over the Emeryville community converge at our schools to read aloud to Anna Yates students.

Classroom Assistants: Volunteers provide general assistance for teachers and students in the classroom, duties generally include assisting teachers with prep work, assisting with classroom projects, and working with students.

Subject Tutors: Volunteer tutors work with students in small groups in specialized subject areas, Math, Science, English, History or Computer Science, particularly with students performing significantly above or below grade level.

Young Writers Workshop: Volunteers work within the classroom with students in small groups assisting with all phases of the writing process.

English Language Learners/ESL Tutoring: Individual English tutoring, using English only and focusing on vocabulary building games and conversational exercises supporting new English language learners in K-6th classrooms.

Emery College Club: Assist college bound students from grades 7-12 with the college selection and application process, scholarship and internship applications, and general navigation of the college prep process.

After School Programs Opportunities exist for volunteers in all of the district’s after school activities including tutoring, SAT prep, career orientation, field trips, arts, dance, theater, and sports.
